Teens and "Body Piercing"

Does your teenager want to get their body pierced? If so, you should learn more about the risks before letting it happen.

Researchers have found a clear link between body piercing and other risky behaviours among teens. Of course, we’re not talking about girls getting their ears pierced—that’s pretty harmless. We’re talking about kids who want holes in other parts of their body. These teens are more likely to smoke, use alcohol, have sex, skip school and get into fights. And there are health risks to consider as well. Piercings can easily get infected and cause problems down the road—especially in places like the tongue or the lip. It’s painful, and the holes never heal, even if your teenager decides to stop wearing jewellery.

Obviously, piercing isn’t the problem; it’s just the symptom. Kids who gravitate toward this kind of behaviour are probably struggling with rebellion, or hanging around with the wrong crowd. Parents should talk to them, and try to find out what’s going on in their heads. Chances are, what they need is attention and some parental love and guidance.
