Sleep-Deprived Teens

If you have a teenager at home, they're quite possibly up until midnight talking to friends on facebook and snapchat. If so, they probably struggle to get out of bed in the morning.

Sometimes it’s all a teacher can do to keep teenagers from dozing off in class. And it’s no wonder. Most teens are living on six hours of sleep a night, even though studies show that they need between eight and ten hours to function properly. Researchers say that teenagers are among the most sleep-deprived people on the planet. Most live in a state of chronic fatigue, which can affect their mood, behaviour and performance.

But it’s more than an academic problem. Some doctors say that sleep deprivation actually interferes with growth, since important hormones are secreted during sleep.

So if you’re tired of raising a walking zombie, set some bedtime boundaries in your home. A good night’s sleep is just what the doctor ordered.
