Making Christmas Meaningful

With songs about Santa playing in the supermarket and advertisements pressuring us to spend more money, Christmas can become a little distorted.

How can we refocus our family’s attention onto the things that are really important at this time of the year? Here a few things to try.

• First, bake some treats to hand out to friends and neighbours. While you are there, ask them how the year has been for them and hear their stories.
• Second, select gift vouchers to help those in emerging countries receive items like a goat, a cow or couple of chickens. It will be a gift that will keep on giving.
• Third, I heard of a family that perform a nativity play every year– the kids have all grown up but they still enjoy dressing up with their own kids as they tell the real Christmas story.
• Finally, consider inviting someone that would be alone this Christmas to join you for a meal.

By thinking of others more than ourselves we can get our focus back on what Christmas is really all about.
