Home Fire Drills

Remember those fire drills you used to have in Primary School? There was a good reason for those.

When a fire starts, people don’t always have the best instincts—especially when it happens in the home. In fact, each year there are over 10,000 house fires in Australia. That’s why a home fire drill isn’t such a bad idea.

Practice with your kids what they should do if a fire ever starts. Teach them how to open windows and push out screens, and which doors and windows make for the best exits. Draw a diagram of your house, marking at least two ways out of every room in the house—especially bedrooms.

During your fire drills, agree on a meeting place. And make the drills as realistic as possible. Try blocking some exits, so your kids will have to experiment with different escape routes. You’ll be glad you practiced if it ever becomes more than a drill.
